Yorgos Panagiotopoulos

I wrote my first piano piece when I was twelve and that is what I still do for a living most of the time. I am melody-driven (so kind of old-fashioned for today's music) which means that what I make is not a very good generic background music. I like making themes which are strongly attached to characters and I prefer to incorporate custom textures that are native to the world of the story.

Since 2008 I have also been a researcher and creative director of Contemporary Music Ensembles - AOT, for the last decade I have been teaching an annual workshop in an approach in modern composition and orchestration in various music schools in Greece and I am the artistic director of the international music festival of my hometown TRIPolis Rock Fest. In 2018 some of my work was presented at the Megaron - The Athens music hall, chosen among over 150 composers from all over the world. I have worked extensively with children, usually for research purposes, mostly trying to have fun and learn from them.

Since 2015 I 've been working to extend the creative process to incorporate more means of human communication. I have written a stage play called Ο Κίτρινος Πειρατής (The Yellow Pirate) and I am running a theatre workshop in Athens called Γύρω από τη φωτιά which is focused on the creation rather than the presentation method. My research on the full creative process of the narrative mechanism is included in a two volume work called Ο Σκατζόχοιρος και η Αλεπού (The Fox and the Hedgehog) which is currently under publication in 2023.

I am based in Athens but sometimes work in London.
